Chapter 16

No more books arrived, but I’d crafted my little spy. The tiny camera sat on the tip of my finger, no larger than a fly, complete with delicate paper wings. But without life magic or a lot more tek, I couldn’t get the ocular signal to work. The signal would allow me to see what it saw. Pretty vital for a spy.

Thanks to Talen, I had a coat with unknown abilities, and I had two days left to figure out a way to escape.

He had said to make it to the arena, but that left little room for mistakes, and lately, mistakes had been plaguing me. I needed a plan too.

An arena was just another prison cell, that prisoners were expected to dance in or die. They weren’t designed to allow gladiators to escape. I had no idea what Talen planned, and I doubted I’d see him again before the fight. Trust him, he had said. And he’d told me exactly the kind of fae he was, told me the ugly truth of him. Those words had cost him.

Trust.

I had never trusted easily. Trust opened a door to the unknown, and sometimes an open door invited the monsters inside. I knew because I was one. Was Talen one too?

I tucked the spy-bot into my pocket and called out to the guards outside my room. “Hey!” One eventually entered. “Take me to Sjora.”

“No.” Stern-faced and as cold as ice, he was the same guard who had gotten frisky with his spear right after I stepped off the shuttle.

“I’ll be dead soon, and then she’ll never know what I have to say.”

His thin mouth ticked. “Tell me and I’ll tell her.”

He couldn’t lie. He would tell her. After I was dead. I draped my arms through the bars and slowly, methodically, checked him out from head to toe. Pale skin, eyes the lightest shade of blue, white hair, thin and fine, as delicate as moth wings. His natural beauty had turned cruel some time ago. He was winterlands, for sure. Quick to anger, quick to judge, and curious to a fault. I could use that. “How long have you served Sjora?”

“I’m not permitted to talk with you.” He whirled on his heels and headed for the door.

“Well,” I drawled, “you already broke that rule, so you might as well break it some more. Aren’t you curious?”

He stopped.

“In two days, I’ll be gone. No more Wraithmaker.” His back straightened. I had hooked him. Now all I had to do was reel him in. “Ask me anything.”

“Did Oberon order you to kill the queen?” He didn’t even turn around.

Ah, I hadn’t expected that. That was the golden question, wasn’t it? The one they all wanted an answer to but were afraid to ask for fear Oberon would surely have them killed in their beds for treason. But this guard and I were a long way from Faerie, and I had all the answers on the tip of my tongue.

“Come here and I’ll tell you,” I told his stiff back.
